Refresh Your Home Decor with Low-Maintenance Houseplants

Plants are a refreshing interior design accent that brings in a bit of greenery, and some varieties help purify the air. Even if you don’t have a green thumb, these five plants are very hardy and thrive with the least amount of water or light:

Aloe vera is popular for its medicinal properties. Its spongy, structured form also makes it a great indoor plant. It thrives in various container sizes as long as it’s exposed to a reasonable amount of sunlight. Worried you’ll forget to water your aloe vera? Don’t be—aloe vera is prone to root rot and needs very little water.

Peperomias are small, dainty plants perfect for desktop accents, especially when placed in colorful pots. Known for their vibrant, textured, shiny leaves, peperomias come in a wide variety, such as red-edge and watermelon. The potting soil needs to remain dry, which means you don’t have to water as often.

Snake plants are great accents for minimalist and modern interiors. Their bright yellow edges and clean, structured forms give a sleek, neat look while adding a pop of color. Snake plants thrive in normal temperatures and infrequent waterings, since the soil should remain dry. You can allow them to grow tall so they serve as floor ornaments, or trim back the stems and use as a desktop or shelf accent.

English ivy is a tiny plant that loves to spread out in all directions, making it a great option if you want to cover a corner of the room. It’s also easy to propagate. Simply cut off a section from the stem and replant it in another pot. English ivy thrives in cooler temperatures and it needs to be watered regularly to keep the soil moist.

Pothos plants, known for their short, wide, heart-shaped leaves, are perfect for tables and shelves. Pothos help purify the air, especially by removing toxins from manufactured chemical products. Although this plant tends to produce long, trailing stems when left unchecked, it can easily be trimmed. Pothos thrive in a variety of lighting conditions and like to dry out completely between waterings, so it does not need to be watered regularly.
