Tips for Keeping Your New Year's Resolutions

We start each new year with the best of intentions. Whether the goal is to lose 20 pounds, stop smoking, work out more, or go back to school, we work hard at the beginning of the year, fully intending to reach our goals.

It does not have to be that way, however. There are some proven ways to make sure your New Year's resolutions do not drop by the wayside and your goals continue well into the coming year. Here are some practical tips to help you keep your New Year's resolutions:

Focus On One Goal. You may want to lose weight, quit smoking, and get a better education, but trying to tackle everything at once is often counterproductive. Instead of trying to do everything at once, pick your most important goal and stick to it.

Break Your Goal into Manageable Chunks. If your goal is to lose 20 pounds, setting a weekly goal of losing a pound or two is the best course of action.

Reward Yourself for Small Accomplishments. Give yourself a small reward each time you reach a goal. These small rewards will encourage you to do even better and give you a real sense of accomplishment.

Get Your Friends Involved. No one likes to work out alone, so why not start a fitness club at work, or walk with your neighbors? Getting your friends involved can also give you the motivation you need when you would rather be doing something else.

Make Your Goal Public. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram can be your best friends when it comes to keeping New Year's resolutions. Make your intentions known to your followers and friends, and encourage them to hold your feet to the fire when you would rather give up. Create weekly progress posts so your followers can give you encouragement and feedback.

Accept that Setbacks Are Inevitable. No one makes it through a weight-loss plan or smoking-cessation program without a few setbacks. Accept that setbacks are likely to happen, and do not let one slipup derail your ultimate goal.
