Fall Project: Maximize the Space in Your Garage

Often, the garage is designated as a secondary storage area of the house. If the clutter builds up, there can be no space left for a car. To create a more functional garage space, try the following five organization tips:

Declutter: Declutter your garage by using cabinets to store items like tools, spare parts, cleaning supplies, and other items commonly found in the garage. Ensure that cabinets and other storage spaces are designed to fit specifically in your garage to avoid bumping into things or using up space needed for your car.

Create Zones: Group the items in your garage into different categories and set aside different zones to store each category. For example, you could create zones for tools, cleaning supplies, spare parts, and others, which ensures that similar items are stored together. Not only does this technique help you declutter your garage, but it is a great way to quickly locate the items you need.

Go Vertical: Make use of vertical storage options like pegboards, hanging shelves, wall racks, and others to store items and free up much-needed space in your garage. Vertical storage is especially effective in helping you remove long and large items such as hoses and yard tools from the floor of your garage.

Use Ceiling Storage: If your garage is tiny or you have a large amount of stuff lying around, consider making use of the ceiling as a storage option. Ceiling storage can help you free up lots of floor space and make it easier to work and move around in your garage. Ceiling storage must be securely installed to prevent accidents and injuries from items falling from above. The most common types of ceiling storage include storage lifts, hooks, pulley systems, and shelves.

Install Fold-Down Workbenches: If you use your garage for home improvement projects, consider installing a fold-down workbench that can be folded up after use. The bench can be installed into a wall and taken down whenever you need to work on a project.
